World Markets Fall After Obama Proposes Tighter Regulations for Banks
Stock market indexes dropped sharply around the world Friday, following U.S. President Barack Obama's proposals to tighten regulation of the nation's largest banks and financial firms.
Japan's Nikkei index lost more than 2.5 percent by the close of Friday's trading, while markets in Manila, Shanghai, Sydney and Taiwan were off by one percent or more.Key European stock markets were down between one and two percent, while U.S. stocks were off by as much as nine-tenths of a percent in Friday's trading.
In a speech Thursday, Mr. Obama proposed limits on the size of banks and curbs on the kind of risks they can take.The president said without reforms, the "reckless risks" that brought on the financial crisis could bring another economic disaster.
