Fit or Fat

ANCHOR
The belief that fatty foods like bacon and fried eggs are bad for your health is under question. The popular Atkins diet says the real culprit for making people fat are carbohydrates. Malika Kapur gives us the bottom line now on the craze for saying “no” to carbs.

CORRESPONDENT
Not everyone would call this diet food. If you are on a high protein diet it could be a typical meal. Thanks to the popularity of low carbohydrate diets, millions of people are filling up on protein and fat and seeing their weight drop.

CORRESPONDENT
It’s an eating plan popularized by diet guru , Dr. Atkins. His Low Carb Manual has sold 15 million copies in the last thirty years and is still a best- seller. In the U.S., sales of meat snacks have risen in recent years. And there’s talk low carb dining could replace vegetarianism as a new eating trend. The Atkins diet has a smaller following in Europe. If it catches on, this Italian restaurant, which prides itself on strong pasta sales, says it’s ready to tackle the challenge.

CORRESPONDENT
This Italian deli has some foods, foods rich in protein like this meat here and foods rich in carbohydrates like pasta, but as more and more people cut out the carbohydrates from their diet, it’s bread and pasta makers who feel the pinch.

CORRESPONDENT
Those who aren’t enthusiastic about low carbs could lose out. Food giant Unilever recently missed its quarterly profit forecast because of poor sales at its Slimfast range. The problem, dieters preferred low-carb foods instead. Analysts say there’s huge potential in the business of smaller waist-lines and better bottom-lines, and cutting out carbs could be just as popular with food companies as it is with dieters.
