The New South Wales police minister Troy Grant says his thoughts are with the family and colleagues of a veteran police officer who was stabbed by an alleged sex offender in Sydney's south-east. Detective sergeant John Breda was attempting to arrest 33-year-old Nick Newman when he was injured. The officer had surgery for internal injuries overnight and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Nine people have been taken to hospital after suspected drug overdoses at a dance party at Festival Hall in west Melbourne. Emergency services were called to the venue at 11 pm last night. All nine were taken to various hospitals and are in a serious condition. The victims were attending the "I am Hardstyle" concert.
