An international jury will hear from the crews of Supermaxis Comanche and Wild Oats XI this afternoon, in a hearing that could decide the line honours result of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Wild Oats XI smashed the race record last night to win its ninth line honours title. Comanche came in 26 minutes later and soon after filed an official protest over a near collision with Wild Oats at the start of the race.

Defence experts say Australian spending on US weapons and military equipment is likely to continue to grow, after topping 10 billion dollars over the past four years. The spending figure has emerged in a national audit office report which has compiled government contracts since the 2012-13 financial year. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute says the federal government's increase to the defence budget means foreign military sales from the US will steadily rise.

A woman has been killed in a crash on the Hume Highway near Gunning in the New South Wales Southern Tablelands. The woman was driving south on the highway at around 9 o'clock this morning when her van collided with a truck travelling in the same direction. 22 people have lost their lives on New South Wales roads since the 15th of december.

And England has levelled Australia's first innings total of 327 in the fourth Ashes Test at the MCG. Alistair Cook has passed 150 runs. Off spinner Nathan Lyon has taken three wickets after lunch, including Moeen Ali for 20.
