The Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says a number of asylum seekers on Manus Island have been arrested by Papua New Guinea police. The detention centre has closed, but more than 350 men have spent weeks in makeshift accommodation there, saying alternative housing is not safe. This morning PNG police went into the detention centre in an attempt to remove the men.

The Liberal candidate in the Bennelong by-election has apologised after a video from the 90s emerged of him appearing to joke about violence and rape. John Alexander says his comments were inappropriate and completely unacceptable. The Prime Minister says Mr Alexander has done the right thing by apologising.

A UN tribunal has found former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic guilty of genocide and CRImes against humanity. Mladic has been sentenced to life in prison over the slaughter of 8000 men and boys at Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo that killed more than 11,000 people. Mladic's legal team says it'll appeal the conviction and sentence.

The covers are off after a rain delay at the Gabba, with England in a strong position on day one of the first Ashes Test. Opener Alastair Cook was out for two. Mitchell Starc has claimed Australia's only wicket.
