Hurricane Irma has killed at least eight people on the French Caribbean island territory of Saint Martin. The monster storm is said to have almost demolished Barbuda. It's also wreaked havoc on Puerto Rico and is now moving towards Cuba and Florida. Irma is one of the most powerful storms to hit the Atlantic Basin.

The High Court has ruled the Federal Government's $122-million postal survey on same sex marriage will go ahead. The survey forms have been printed and will be mailed out to households from Tuesday. Opponents had argued the Commonwealth's funding of the survey was unconstitutional.

Perth-based writer and academic Josephine Wilson has won the 2017 Miles Franklin Literary Award for her novel Extinctions — becoming just the fifth West Australian to claim the gong. Australia's most prestigious literary prize — in its 60th year — was bestowed upon Ms Wilson at a function at the New South Wales State Library in Sydney.

And Australia has beaten Bangladesh by seven wickets in the second test in Chittagong. Glen Maxwell hit a six to finish the match. The tourists lost three wickets before reaching the victory target of 86. Nathan Lyon took 13 wickets. The series finished at one-all.
